The Look Elsewhere

VR PERFORMANCE, DANCE, INSTALLATION — 2017

ORIGINAL WORK
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PALAIS DE TOKYO, PARIS + NOWNESS

ROLE.     CREATIVE DIRECTOR

CONTEXT.

Three dancers, each wearing a VR headset, each inside their own virtual world — unable to see the audience, unable to feel their own bodies the way they usually do. They dance alone, guided only by a mental representation of their movements. In front of them, an audience watching something the dancers cannot see: the collision between human gesture and abstract form.

APPROACH.

I led the creative direction of The Look Elsewhere, a live performance in collaboration with fashion designer Samuel Fasse, choreographer Morgan Belenguer, and music artist Jackson And His Computer Band. Each dancer enters a unique visual universe where logic breaks down and abstractions have a life of their own. The dancers can answer them, defy them, or harmonise with them. Each abstract shape represents a musical note — when a dancer and a shape collide, a sound is produced. The three dancers jointly compose the score by moving, each inside their own area. The music you hear is the music their bodies are writing.

The choreography, the motion of the virtual shapes, and the interaction between both create a musical narrative that reveals itself in real time to the audience — while remaining invisible to the performers themselves. Every output is unique. All borders are questioned. There is no main actor.

WORK.

A live VR performance at the Palais de Tokyo. Three dancers, three virtual worlds, one live-composed score. Sound composition by Jackson And His Computer Band. An experience with an infinity of outputs. A film of the performance was produced and distributed through a partnership with Nowness.
